Region 9 baseball: Warriors, Flyers, Mustangs all score big in series wins; Snow Canyon on top

ST. GEORGE — While Desert Hills had a bye, the three other top teams in Region 9 baseball had their bats swinging in big wins this week.

Snow Canyon remains atop the Region 9 standings at 8-0. Dixie is right behind in second place at 7-1. Desert Hills remained in third at 6-2.

Crimson Cliffs defeated Pine View twice and is in fourth place at 7-3. The Panthers are 2-6 and hold the fifth position in the region.

Hurricane (0-8) and Cedar (0-10) round out the the standings. Crimson and Cedar have two games remaining in the region while the other five squads have four Region 9 games left.

The Snow Canyon Warriors made a dominant sweep of the Cedar Reds this week, with both games ending early due to the mercy rule.

On Tuesday at Snow Canyon, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, then later added five runs in the third and eight more in the fourth. The team’s 11 hits were spread out among eight different players in the lineup.

Picking up the win on the mound was starter Kyson Goates, who went the full five innings, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out eight during the 16-0 shutout.

Friday afternoon in Cedar City, Snow Canyon once again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, with Ryder Harrison’s double and Crew Secrist’s single each bringing in one run.

Cedar managed to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first, as leadoff hitter Jacob Boyer hit a double on the first pitch. After being bunted to third, Boyer scored when Cody Nash hit a ground ball and reached first safely on an error.

That was all the scoring the Reds would see, as Snow Canyon pitcher Andrew Lyon allowed just one other hit the rest of the way while striking out 10 and walking none.

The Warriors broke the game open by scoring eight more runs in the top of the second, with one of the rally’s seven hits being a three-run homer by Harrison.

Snow Canyon next plays at Desert Hills Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The Reds have a bye from Region 9 action next week, although they do have non-region games scheduled at Canyon View on Wednesday and at Timpanogos on Friday.

Dixie 10, Hurricane 0 | Dixie 15, Hurricane 4

The red hot Flyers have won 15 consecutive ball games. Their last loss was March 13 at Desert Hills, their only blemish so far in region play.

Dixie cruised to the sweep over the Tigers. At home on Tuesday, Dixie scored in every inning but the fifth and cranked out nine hits in the win.

Senior catcher Ridge Erickson, bound for Brigham Young University next year, led the way for Dixie with three hits, including a double and a triple, and three RBIs for the winners.

Senior shortstop Boston Vest, bound for New Mexico State University next year, collected four RBIs on his two hits, including a double.

Carter Turley and Logan Leavitt accounted for solo RBI’s in Dixie’s victory.

Dixie junior righthander Jake Andreas cruised to the pitching win. He allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out eight in his six shutout innings.

Manny Santos and Lincoln Lofthouse accounted for the two Hurricane hits in the setback.

Friday night in Hurricane, Dixie again scored in every inning but the fifth and cemented the mercy rule with six tallies in the sixth frame.

Dixie belted out 10 hits in the win and seven different Flyers recorded at least one RBI in the victory.

Cooper Bartholomew led the Dixie charge at the plate, getting two hits including a double. He drove in three RBIs and scored once in three at-bats.

Freshman Weston Gilmore and Leavitt each recorded two RBIs in the Dixie win while senior Braxton Yates chipped in with a triple, a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Leavitt picked up the pitching win, throwing four innings and giving up five hits. He yielded three runs, walked one and struck out seven Tigers.

Senior James Lea hurled the last two innings for Dixie, allowing a run off three hits. He walked one batter and struck out four Tigers.

Dixie finishes the Region 9 schedule with two games against Crimson Cliffs and then two against Snow Canyon. The Flyers are in Washington Fields to face the Mustangs Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile Hurricane is at Pine View Tuesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m.

The Mustangs followed the same script in their two wins over the Panthers: get ahead by a lot early, then hold on to survive the later innings.

Tuesday night in Pine View the Mustangs led 5-1 after the top of the fourth but the scrappy Panthers tied it 6-6 after six.

Crimson plated two runs in the top of the seventh and kept Pine View from scoring in the final half-inning.

The Mustangs swatted seven hits in the win and collected six RBIs. Steele Barben and Trey Evans each had a hit and two RBIs to pace the Crimson attack.

Kyle Skinner and Jason McArthur accounted for an RBI each.

Pine View cranked out 11 hits and collected four RBIs in the setback. Freshman Porter Campbell led the way with three knocks and two runs driven home.

Andrew Shakespeare had a double among his two hits and an RBI and Carter Stubbs boomed a triple that scored a Pine View run in the setback.

Friday night in Washington Fields, Barben pitched four and a third innings of one-run ball for the Mustangs, who led 9-1 before Pine View rallied against Crimson’s bullpen.

A six-run third and a three-run fourth put Crimson ahead for good. Eight different Mustangs hit safely at least once and seven different batters recorded at least one RBI in the win.

Barben was charged with three runs off of two hits in the pitching win. The righthander, committed to play football at Utah Tech when he goes to college next year, walked five and struck out six Panthers.

Ty White and Mason Anderson finished the game out on the hill for Crimson.
