National Record Store Day 2024 to bring in record fans and music collectors alike

PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) — With National Record Store Day coming on Saturday, April 20, 2024, Cheap Thrills Records will be participating and celebrating the unique culture of independent record stores across the country for this annual event.

2024 Teacher of the Year awarded to Angela Moore

For this event, Cheap Thrills Records will be extending its hours for both of its locations in Princeton, WV located at 1130 Stafford Drive and in Bristol, VA located at 507 State Street, with the event starting from 10:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. The event will also feature live music, food trucks, special deals, giveaways, and tons of exclusive collectible vinyl releases. Matt Mullins from Matt Mullins and the Bringdowns will also be performing at the Bristol location from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M.

National Record Store Day is a big deal to fans and music collectors alike partly due to the fact that there is only a very limited number of collectible records and exclusive releases available at participating stores.

“It’s a day to celebrate the unique culture of record stores, independent record stores across the country, and on this day, probably the most significant part of it is that we have access to exclusive releases that are only available at stores that participate in [National] Record Store Day. And they’re all super limited, sometimes runs to 500, 1,000, 2,000 [limited amount of pressings] whatever, they’re all super limited, and fans will flock to record stores to get their hands on those because once they’re gone, they’re gone and they don’t see them anymore,” said Wyatt Lilly, the Owner of Cheap Thrills Records.

Lilly also explained why music fans and collectors choose vinyl when it comes to listening to their favorite artists.

“I think it’s all about connecting with the artist and that’s why we listen to record, to music anyways, you want to connect with the artist, and it’s just a more intimate experience when you have a record, you know, you pull a record out of the great artwork and you put it on there, and you listen kind of intentionally, and if you have a good system, it’s just a nice, warm analog sound that can’t be replicated with streaming or any digital music.”

Lilly also expressed how fans and collectors will come from near and far just to find the record they want. Nothing will stop a dedicated fan.

“We draw in people from all across the region. People will come, they’ll drive a couple hours at least to come to our store on a regular basis, but they all show up on [National] Record Store Day. So, we’ll get people here from Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford, Roanoke even, Beckley, Lewisburg, all over the place.”

And to continue with the topic of dedicated fans, they will do everything they can to get that exclusive or limited release.

“People will line up for hours before we open up to get a chance, to get what they’re looking for. We’ve even had folks camp out over night…like I said, all those releases are limited and they want to make sure that they get them, so they want to be first in line,” concluded Lilly.
