Michael Glaser, 45, of Lincoln, was charged Thursday with two counts of first-degree false imprisonment, two counts of terroristic threats, four counts of using a firearm to commit a felony, unlawful discharge of a firearm, and resisting arrest using a deadly weapon.
Judge Timothy Phillips set his percentage bond at $1 million.
At about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lincoln police officers were called to the Casey's at 2500 N.W. 12th St. on a report of a man who had entered the store and put a gun on the checkout counter, Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow said at a news conference Tuesday night.
There were three employees inside the Casey's at the time — one employee managed to exit the store and two employees barricaded themselves in a back room, Morrow said. There were no customers inside the store at the time, but a customer who was walking toward the business was the first to call law enforcement.
Lancaster County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said at a news conference Wednesday morning that Glaser had a previous relationship with an employee at the Casey's and had gone there to confront them. That employee was not there when Glaser arrived.
When officers arrived at the gas station, Glaser fired a shot at them, and at least one officer returned fire, Morrow said.
A short time later, Glaser fired more shots at officers who were positioned outside the store and they returned fire again, Morrow said.
Houchin said the Sheriff's Office, which is leading the investigation, was still trying to determine how many shots were fired by Glaser and the officers as of Wednesday morning.
Glaser suffered injuries to his upper chest and forehead during the second exchange, Houchin said.
He was taken to the hospital after being arrested and later released. He is being held at the Lancaster County jail.
Two Lincoln police officers fired their weapons during the incident. A plainclothes State Patrol trooper who was working a different assignment nearby also responded to the scene and fired their weapon, Morrow said.
All three have been placed on administrative leave.
The Lincoln Police Department's SWAT team and deputies with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
Morrow said she would release the names of the LPD officers involved at a later time.
Nebraska State Patrol Col. John Bolduc said the name of the trooper involved will not be released, as has been the State Patrol's long-standing policy.
Law enforcement later got a warrant to search Glaser's residence on the 2700 block of A Street, where a short shotgun was found. Houchin said they're looking into adding additional charges for the gun found in his home.
Tuesday's incident is the third officer-involved shooting in Lincoln in the past six months.
The officer pulled behind Braulio Blazio's vehicle at a dead end near North 19th and Knox streets and got out.
Blazio pulled out, hitting a parked car and driving over landscaping rocks, and began accelerating toward the officer, who fired two rounds without hitting him, police say.
At about 12:20 p.m. in the parking lot of the Microtel Inn & Suites at 2505 Fairfield St., a Lincoln police officer tried to confront Hanika on an outstanding warrant from Council Bluffs, Iowa, for a probation violation regarding a weapons charge.
When the officer tried to approach Hanika, he backed his Wrangler multiple times into a police cruiser, causing life-altering injuries to a woman who was in the vehicle, police say.
The officer fired two clusters of rounds into the vehicle when Hanika moved forward after backing into the police car. Two bullets struck Hanika in the head and his lower body.
Both officers were cleared of any wrongdoing.
Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird issued a statement Wednesday morning praising the officers who were involved in Tuesday's incident.
"The swift and courageous response of LPD and our partners at LSO and NSP minimized the threat and harm," she said.
