ENJOY THE LIFE OF AN ANCHOR BAY CITIZEN: Living on the smallest of the Great Lakes, Our Town has outstanding citizens who make the area the best anywhere. All living here are good people, help others, are good neighbors and work honestly. Our churches have services that make us all love one another. Our schools have teachers encourage our children to love learning. Then, when walking the clean streets, one will meet a friend and/or make a new friend. The shops have items that are unique to the city and the lake. The restaurants have menus to lure appetites. Our flag, the second tallest in America, can be seen across the lake and waves unendingly in the park. Growing up here and living here forever is a gift. Let’s be grateful and thankful.

APRIL 14 BIG BREAKFAST: In the VFW Post 7573 Cove, from 8-11 a.m., with a $10 minimum fee with $2 for children ages 10 and younger. World War II veterans eat free. The menu includes eggs and omelets to order, scrambled eggs, French toast, homemade gravy, biscuits, bacon, sausage and potatoes. Yum!

TACO GOODNESS APRIL 19: Enjoy a fiesta! From 5-7 p.m., at VFW Post 7573, 35011 23 Mile, in the Cove, really enjoy a dinner plate of tacos, choice of protein, rice and beans, chicken, beef or pork, corn and flour tortillas. APRIL 20 PROGRAM NOT TO MISS: Readers and friends are invited to Grace United Methodist Church, 49655 Jefferson, Chesterfield, to hear the words of speaker Portia Jackson, of Turning Point. With the topic, “An Empowerment Based Approach to Human Trafficking,” from 10-11 a.m., discussion will follow from 11a.m.-noon. Grace United Methodist Church is a champion of the topic. APRIL 25 PAINTERS ALERT! The class, titled Early Topical, will take place at Pearl Beach Lions Club, 9590 Phelps Road, off M-29, Clay Township, 7-8:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required by calling 586-219-1356. MEAT BINGO APRIL 28: At VFW Post 7573, at 2 p.m., the games cost $1 a stick, during five rounds, with three winners. The post is located at 35011 23 Mile, in Our Town.

APRIL 30 FIREKEEPERS CASINO TRIP: Arrive by 7:45 a.m. for an 8 a.m. departure to Battle Creek, to the Firekeepers Casino on a motor coach with friends. Be at the Lowes parking lot, 27900 23 Mile, Chesterfield, by that time. Contact Shirley at 586-531-1934 to reserve a seat. The fee is $50 a person, which includes transportation, driver’s tip, raffles, movie, small snack and bottled water. Arrival back home is around 7:30 p.m. At the casino, the facility offers $20 card play and a $5 food coupon. Reach 55 points and after checking the points earned, $10 will be placed on the card.

MAY 4 BROWN BAG BOUTIQUE: Turning Point will be the beneficiary of the event. A special fundraiser, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be held at First Congregational Church, 36223 Alfred, corner of Base. Available for sale will be gentle, used women’s clothes, purses and accessories, with the fee to be $10 a bag.

IRA BICYCLE SAFETY DAY MAY 4: At 10:30 a.m., at Ira Township, in the parking lot, 7085 Meldrum, a special event for youngsters when they bring their bikes, will be taking place. Free helmets and safety booklets will be given to them. Also, SEMCOG safety items given. Bike inspections will happen, too. A fun event will be for the children to ride an obstacle course. Sponsor of the day is Nichel & Saph Insurance Agency. Al Lauland will be on hand.

PERENNIAL AND SEED EXCHANGE MAY 4: At 10 a.m., in the Ira Township parking lot, 7085 Meldrum, bring plants and seeds and exchange them with other gardeners. Tips will be shared and questions will be answered by vendors or garden art and garden related products.

MAY 4 RIB OUT DINNER: In the Cove, VFW Post 7573, at $15 a person, enjoy a half slab of ribs, baked potato, coleslaw, roll and dessert. Note: Advanced tickets are advised. Stop by the Cove. Call 586-725-7100 for hours.

FULL BODY FITNESS PROGRAM NEWS: Outdoors, starting Tuesday, May 13, through the fall season and also Mondays at 6:15 a.m. and Thursdays, at 6:15 p.m. Pre-registration is requested at the Ira Township office, 7085 Meldrum, with a fee of $50 for the entire program, or $10 a class. Otherwise, $15 as a drop-in fee. The program will take place in the Ira Township Park, corner of Short Cut and Meldrum roads. No experience is necessary. STEAK-OUT MAY 17: In the Cove, VFW Post 7573, 35011 23 Mile, invites guests to join them, 5:30-7:30 p.m., to grill a New York strip steak outdoors, at the post. The fee is $18 and includes a baked potato, salad, roll and dessert. Entertainment by country singer Garrett Veal.

“ROCKIN’ TRIBUTE” MAY 17: Enjoy entertainment provided by Donny Rod (Rod Stewert) and Elvis Kelly (Elvis Presley). At VFW Post 7573, 35011 23 Mile, at 6 p.m., join co-hosts, the Selfridge Chesterfield Lions Club and the American Business Women’s Association Suburban Connection Charter Chapter. Proceeds will support scholarships, grants and community service projects. Cash bar. Concessions for purchase. Gift basket raffles, 50/50 raffles and a silent auction for desserts. NBIC IN CONCERT MAY 19: The New Baltimore Interfaith Choir, performing for Our Town since the fall of 1966, will present a spring concert, “Faith, Family and Freedom” at 2 p.m., at Lighthouse Bible Church, 52260 Washington, in Our Town. Sandra Vallee Fearn is the accompanist. The program will include selections that the audience will want to join the choir in singing. Children will be invited to sing, too. The VFW Post 7573 Color Guard will post the colors and retire them, at the concert. The Rev. Jeff Bean is the pastor at Lighthouse Bible Church, and the choir appreciates the kindness of Rev. Bean and Mrs. Linda Carrothers, who assists the choir with rehearsals and the performance. Mark the calendar and be there. It will be an uplifting afternoon, guaranteed.

NB RECREATION TRIP ANNOUNCED: Make a reservation for a senior citizen boat cruise on the Detroit River on the ship, Detroit Princess, scheduled for Flag Day, June 14. Go to the Aquatic Center, 52401 Ashley, to reserve the event, for a fee of $70 a person, to be a part of the day. Included is transportation, with departure at 9:30 a.m. from Maynard “Red” Aurand Memorial Park on 24 Mile, and on the ship, a buffet and Motown music. CHESTERFIELD HISTORICAL SOCIETY INVITES YOU: Here is the first event of the CHS summer: June 1-2: Ste. Claire Voyagers and 1750s-era French fur traders to visit their grounds on Sugarbush Road, Chesterfield. To mark the calendar, here are future events: July 13: World War II reenactment with the Michigan Technical and History Society, with Allied and Axis encampments and displays. Aug. 10-11: Vietnam-era reenactment; Sept. 14 CHS Heritage Days with hands-on activities and games. “Kids Tent,” candle making, roping making, corn grinding, scavenger hunt and craft show.

CHILDREN ALERT! A June 23-July 14 Ira Nature Heroes Program for youngsters ages 5 to 8 years. A four-week session, on Sundays, at 10 a.m., it is a program that appreciates nature and the environment. Under the leadership of Amber Trombley and assistant Reid Hiltunen, children will be educated about nature and their surroundings. REMEMBER THE NEEDS OF THE PANTRY: St. Mary Queen of Creation Catholic Church has a pantry with free food for those in need of items. The pantry accepts donations and will welcome the following: Ramen noodles, crackers, stuffing, dry food, vegetables, Rice-A-Roni, pasta, oatmeal and soap. In the area of canned food: tomatoes, beef stew, carrots, tuna fish and chicken broth. Also, diapers, any size and wipes. LIONS CLUB BEVERAGE CANS/BOTTLES COLLECTION CONTINUES: On Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon, take empty, clean containers to the Premier Mall, to the Champion Health Club, 33093 23 Mile, where a NB Lions Club member will readily accept them. The earnings will support the Leaders Dogs for the Blind facility in Rochester and to send children without sight to summer camp. Thank you!

ART CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED: VFW Post 7573 Auxiliary invited local high school students to enter the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest recently. The first-place winner is Alexandria Gianino, a sophomore student at Austin Catholic High School. Daughter of Shane and Nicole Gianino, her pastel artwork, a painting of her great-grandfather in uniform with the flag in the background, has earned at $200 award. Her work will be sent to state competition. In second place, with an award of $100, Sandra Lancaster, daughter of Shannon and Susan Lancaster, is a senior at New Haven High School. Her painting depicted a dog walking beside a soldier in uniform with the flag in the background. The awards were presented on April 11. VFW Post 7573 Auxiliary member Sandra VanTiem coordinated the local contest. Congratulations to the winners and to the Auxiliary for continuing to involve young people in patriotic endeavors.
