MADISON, Wis. -- Everyone has a story. And, if you have some time, Dr. Lewis Boyer Harned has nearly a century's worth of them.
The Madison man will turn 100 years young this summer, but before he does his family has arranged for him to do 99 things before his big day. News 3 Now tagged along for one of those things, as Lew went back to his elementary school to visit with some 3rd graders at Shorewood.
According to the gradebook, Lew got A's and B's, but...
"My poorest grade was spelling," he said. "Okay, I got a C in spelling. And I still can't spell today."
But he sure can tell stories.
"I was an orthopedic surgeon," Lew said. "You know, we call ourselves carpenters because we fix broken bones."
Having served in World War II, the Korean War and during Operation Desert Storm, Lew has experienced so much. That's why, when he dispenses pearls of wisdom, you listen.
"One of the things that I follow very carefully is, look at people and try to understand their integrity," Lew said. "You can trust that person. You can say 'would you do this for me?' No question."
He said it's important to enjoy every minute and not go through life with a long face. He said he wants to be remembered for his service in World War II.
"It was because of what we did that we have the life that we have now, and I'm proud of that," Lew said. "I'm glad I was part of it."
He represents part of the Greatest Generation that is a shining example of what it means to "Do Something Good>'
