You can just look at some youth athletes and know that they are bound for great things in their life. Michael Alexander is one of those kids, calm, quiet, calculated. When that whistle blows, and the referee says wrestle, we get to see a side of Mikey that most don’t. A ferocious being comes alive in the place of the normally calm and collected young man, constantly looking to score points, and always ready to launch his opponents to the moon with some slick throw or body roll.
You had better pack a lunch if you are going to wrestle Michael Alexander because he is the real deal.
A sixth grader at Hope Lutheran in Winona, and son of John and Rougina Alexander, Michael has been a staple of leadership at the Winona Warriors Warehouse for the last six years. He has been around wrestling his whole life, but we have seen a level of maturity out of him in the last five years that would match that of a high school athlete. He is currently ranked seventh in the country in the 12U division through USA Wrestling and will continue to be the foundation that wrestling will be built on in the future here in Winona.

Recently Alexander was selected to wrestle for Team Minnesota at the Heartland Duals Team Tournament in Omaha, Nebraska. At that tournament, Alexander went 6-1 and was named MVP of the Tournament. As I said before, he is a force to be reckoned with, as he pinned the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at his weight at this tourney. Complete control and dominance were his tools that weekend, and his only loss came from trying some big moves to try to get a pin for his team to win the fifth-place match against Team Nebraska.
The following weekend, Alexander went into the Northland Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) State Tournament. Here, he wrestled tough and came home with a third-place place finish. In my opinion as a coach, in most brackets, it is a tougher accomplishment to take third than it is to win the whole thing.
Shifting gears, Mikey is now working with the rest of his teammates training Freestyle and Greco for summer tournaments.
We are truly blessed to have Mikey in our room and we look forward to him being a leader for us all the way through high school. As a parent to two of his teammates, it brings me great joy to watch him lead by example and do all the little things right. He is someone that you want your kids to be modeled after and work with him to achieve some great team goals here in Winona.
Congratulations Mikey on your well-deserved success, and we look forward to coaching you to many more accomplishments.
