MSU Extends Offer to 4-Star Wide Receiver

Michigan State football and Coach Smith continue to stick to their plan of recruiting the best talent they have a realistic shot of signing. They offered 4-star wide receiver Jalen Cooper.

New Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith continues to hit the recruiting trail hard. More specifically, he continues to target talented players who may get overlooked by more prominent programs. This seems to be Smith’s game plan during his first or first few seasons at the helm.

Considering the situation Smith stepped into, this could be the most logical route for him and his coaching staff.

MSU recently offered a scholarship to Jalen Cooper of Cibolo, Texas. Cooper is a three-star wide receiver in the 2025 recruiting class. He announced his offer from MSU on Wednesday on social media.

The 6-foot-1 wide receiver is the 71st-ranked wide receiver and the 475th overall prospect in 247Sports' composite rankings. He is also ranked as the 76th overall player from Texas, which is impressive considering the state's football Talent. Cooper would immediately upgrade MSU’s receiver unit.

According to 247Sports, MSU is one of 20 programs that has extended Cooper an offer. Other programs that have offered Cooper include Utah, Baylor, Arkansas, Texas A&M, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Boise State and Houston.

While MSU may not be as big on the football landscape as it used to be or as big on the landscape as some of the other schools that have offered Cooper, it does offer many things the different schools cannot, mainly the ability to compete on a high level in one of the best conferences in college football.

Coach Smith has a plan and is sticking to it. The Spartans desperately need an influx of talent on their roster and a recruiting class they can bet on moving forward, either now or soon. MSU has continued to recruit out-of-state talent aggressively, but not just any out-of-state talent.

Smith has made sure to recruit serviceable players from cities and states that love football, such as Ohio and Texas.

Cooper is yet another three-star athlete to receive a scholarship offer from Coach Smith and MSU. Smith is completely confident in his coaching staff and his ability to develop players successfully. However, his confidence and ability to develop players will be tested early during his tenure at MSU.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.
