New details were revealed during a press conference held by the Warren Police Department on Monday, April 15.

The incident happened Friday, April 12, at about 1:40 p.m. Police said a child called 911 and said their family was being assaulted by his 18-year-old brother. The family believed it was a mental health crisis and said he had never acted with violence before. Police said officers were dispatched to a home located near the intersection of Garbor Drive and Ryan Road, just north of 11 Mile Road.

Footage released by the Warren Police Department captures the garage door to the home opening as officers arrive. The teen came out with a handgun and “took an offensive stance.”

Police said three officers fired 11 shots at the teen and he was struck three times. The entire encounter took seven seconds.

He was treated at the scene by police before being transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No other injuries occurred.

Police said they will not release the name of the 18-year-old out of respect for the family.

The family of the teen is from Bangladesh and members of the community met Sunday to discuss rumors about the shooting. Those members were at the press conference police held Monday, April 15th, to address those rumors and show why police felt it was necessary to shoot.

Police recovered a 9mm Glock handgun from the scene. The teen’s family said they did not know he had a gun or even knew there was a gun in the home. Police said the gun was purchased legally.
