Why is Moody fighting student-loan forgiveness?

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is spending our Florida taxpayer money to sue to stop President Joe Biden’s forgiveness of some student-loan debt (“Moody joins lawsuit to block student loan forgiveness,” April 11). This is proof positive for ordinary Americans, many of whom used to be middle class, that Republican politicians are not your friends. Why?

Remember 2017 when President Trump and the Republicans in Congress doled out a $2 trillion tax cut to the wealthy and large corporations? That was a gift. I have a friend at Cisco and I asked him what Cisco did with the tax cut funds. His reply, “We bought our own stock back.” This was an example of “trickle-down economics.” The money doesn’t trickle down.

But, if the 40 million Americans with $1.6 trillion of student debt had those debts wiped out, what would happen?  We would see demand-side economics at work:  they would spend that money, boosting the economy.

Forgiving that debt for the student borrowers would help to assuage my own feelings of guilt. I spent 12 years in college and my total tuition for all 12 years was less than $17,000; my last year at Harvard Law (1973) was $2,300. My family had no money. I could never have done what I did if I had to pay today’s education costs.  If you aren’t wealthy, Republican politicians are not your friends.

Biden employment gains are a mirage

Regarding the April 11 letter “Biden’s economy is already rosy”: Since the writer knows all the numbers, perhaps he should put them into context. The reason the unemployment number was 6.4% when Biden took office was due to the pandemic. Those same workers who were let go during the pandemic went back to work. It is as simple as that. Biden didn’t create any of those jobs. I am so tried of him taking credit for something he had nothing to do with. People just went back to work because the pandemic ended, also something Biden had no control over.

Why is Newlin supporting Trump?

I saw the article about Dan Newlin voicing his strong support for Donald Trump (“Trump appears at attorney Dan Newlin’s Orlando-area fundraiser”). To say I was surprised is an understatement. As a prominent Central Florida accident attorney, he can support who he wants, but Trump has been found legally liable for cheating and for sexual assault, not to mention his documented lies.

This does not speak well for Newlin or for the respect for the rule of law. Trump has shown a blatant disregard for fairness unless it applies to him. He has openly tried to badger judges, and many jurors and potential jurors have reason to be frightened because of his rhetoric. Why would you support a person who dishonors your profession in such a manner?
