3 horses dead, driver hurt after trailer headed to Keeneland crashes in Nelson County
Three horses are dead and a driver was seriously hurt after a trailer crashed in Nelson County overnight.
Bardstown police said the crash happened around 4 a.m. on Monday. They said the driver was enroute from Arkansas to Keeneland in Lexington.
They said the was on Bluegrass Parkway near Bardstown when it crossed over into the other lanes and then hit an embankment.
Bardstown fire crews said they were able to rescue the driver in 30 minutes. They were flown to UofL Hospital and police said their injuries are serious.
Police said the driver had lacerations to one of his feet, along with two to their head.
It took about four hours to remove the horses with help from Anderson County Large Animal Rescue. In addition to the three horses that died, there were four with life-threatening injuries that were transported to an animal hospital.
It's unclear how many horses were in the trailer, but fire officials said the three that died were worth an estimated $450,000.
Crews said in all, they were at the scene for about 10 hours.
Keeneland's 2024 Spring Race Meet opens April 5.
