Taylor Swift’s Mom Reportedly Disapproved of One of Taylor’s Signature Styles

Before Taylor Swift became the pop star she is today — and long before she became a billionaire! — she was just a teenage girl with a country album and a dream. Back then, the “Karma” singer probably would never have dreamed that almost two decades later she would be on a world tour playing three hours of hits from her Grammy-winning career. Or that her signature style would include gorgeous sparkly outfits, her long blonde hair, and a bold red lipstick. In fact, the whole “red lip, classic thing that you like” almost never even happened.

One of Swift’s former makeup artists dished that the singer’s mom Andrea Swift disapproved of the red lipstick at first, and we are shocked. It’s hard to even picture the “Cruel Summer” singer without it!

Celebrity stylist Gucci Westman said on Tuesday’s episode of The TODAY Show with Hoda & Jenna that she created Swift’s signature red lipstick when she did her makeup for the cover of the April 2009 issue of Allure.

“So, I remember I really wanted to do a red lip on her because I hadn’t seen her in a red lip before,” Westman said. “And her mom — if I’m allowed to say this — was like, ‘Well, Taylor doesn’t wear red.’”

She begged Andrea to let her “just try” the red lipstick. “And the rest is history!” host Jenna Bush Hager quipped.

“So that was her first red,” Westman added. The makeup artist previously shared a picture of the Allure cover on Instagram, where she shared that this was “Taylor’s first ‘red,’” adding, “This look was inspired by Vargas girls & I sent Taylor home with her own tube afterwards ✨”

Can you imagine if Andrea had insisted that Taylor not try out the red lipstick? Would her Red album even have happened? Would she have become the superstar she is today? Honestly, she probably would have, but still. Letting her daughter try out the red lip was the right move for Mama Swift, and it’s a good reminder of the importance of letting your kids take risks — even if they are a bit outside of your comfort zone.

Over the weekend, Swift’s management team Taylor Nation shared an adorable throwback video of a 3-month-old Swift wearing a bunny costume. Andrea held her baby girl as she looked around and waved her arms in the super cute clip.

“Dropping easter eggs since 1989,” the home video was captioned. “What’s your favorite that you’ve found through the eras? 🐰🥚”

Swift is still close with her mom and her dad Scott Swift today, as they often accompany her to her Eras Tour concerts and they even went to her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs football games last fall. She shared a video at a club with her parents and boyfriend after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win, hilariously captioning it, “Accidentally going clubbing with your parents is something everyone should try at least once in their life.”

Hey, if your parents let you do wild things (like try bold lip colors!), the least you can do is invite them to join you at a club.
