HOPEWELL, Va. (WRIC) — The City of Hopewell says residents may notice at “slight chlorine taste and odor” in their water on Monday due to an annual flushing of the city’s water distribution system.

According to the city, on Monday, April 15, Virginia American Water will be switching the disinfectant used for the city’s water distribution system from chloramines, or combined chlorine, to free chlorine.

This process, which will affect water in parts of Prince George County as well as Hopewell, will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and is expected to be complete by the end of June.

This flushing of the water distribution system takes place every year in order to “maintain a high level of water quality,” according to the city by helping clean out buildup of mineral deposits and sediments in the pipes.

In addition to the water distribution system being flushed, the city’s fire hydrants will be checked to ensure they are operating property. This process will involve hydrants being opened simultaneously in a specific area to increase water flow.
