Game notes: The Tigers conclude their two-game road stand Tuesday with an afternoon game against the Pirates. Detroit got off to a hot start to the season with a 5-1 record through the first six games but dropped two out of three against the Oakland Athletics in the first home series of the season to enter Pittsburgh with a 6-3 record.

Casey Mize is on the mound for Detroit on Tuesday as he continues to return from back and elbow surgeries that kept him on the disabled list for most of 2022 and all of 2023. Mize threw 4⅓ innings in his first major league start in over 700 days last week against the Mets. He threw 87 pitches in his return, giving up three earned runs on five hits, two walks and one hit-by-pitch while recording four strikeouts.

After the performance, the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB was happy to finally return to the mound after the long wait but said the outing left him with things to work on like increasing his fastball counts, easing back on the amount of sliders and falling back into the typical starting pitcher routine between his scheduled starts every five games. He will get a test against the Pirates, one of the highest-scoring teams so far in the early days of the 2024 MLB season.

After Tuesday's game against the Pirates, the Tigers have a scheduled off day Wednesday before returning to Detroit for an eight-game homestand. The Tigers first host the Minnesota Twins, last year's AL Central winners, then the Texas Rangers, the reigning World Series champions, in two four-game series before the next road trip at the end of April.
