A 37-year-old local man was recently arrested after police say he sexually abused a then 14-year-old girl in 2020.
Maxie Nathaniel Riddle, of Pocatello, has been charged with two felony counts of lewd conduct with a child under 16 following an Idaho Falls police investigation.
The case was initially investigated in 2020 but did not culminate in any criminal charges until earlier this month.
Idaho Falls Police Department spokesperson Jessica Clements provided the Idaho State Journal with the following statement on Wednesday about the delayed arrest: “This investigation was initially reported to IFPD in 2020, and an initial investigation was started at that time. The case was reassigned to a new detective in March of this year, and the current detective was able to move the case forward to this point where the arrest was made.”
The initial investigation was launched in June 2020 after a staff member of a youth group home in Idaho falls reported the possible sexual abuse of one of their residents between April 25 and 29 in 2020 when the girl was 14.
The officer who began investigating this incident in March re-interviewed the alleged victim, during which she recounted several incidents of sexual contact between herself and Riddle, according to a police report the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.
The girl first described an incident on April 25, 2020, in which Riddle took her and another girl to an appointment. After Riddle dropped off the first girl, he took the victim to a dentist appointment, police said.
After the dentist appointment, Riddle contacted the group home and said that he was having car trouble and would have to stop at a car wash in Idaho Falls, the girl told police. While at the car wash, Riddle forced the girl to conduct a sexual act and stated something to the effect of “this is what you do to me,” police wrote in the report.
A staff member of the group home later corroborated that she received a message from Riddle stating that he had car problems and needed to stop at a car wash, police said.
Another incident occurred between April 25 and 29 in which Riddle entered the victim’s room at night and sexually abused her, the report says. Another resident that was asleep in the room said she remembered waking up and seeing Riddle sitting on the victim’s bed that evening and another resident said they observed Riddle go into the room and close the door behind him, police said.
The victim described other incidents of inappropriate sexual contact between herself and Riddle when the pair were left alone on a bus together, in the basement of the group home when Riddle was tasked with dispersing medication to her and a fifth incident that occurred in the basement bathroom of the group home, the report says.
Riddle was later confronted by a supervisor away from the facility about the contact with the victim, during which he said he “didn’t see what the issue was,” to which the supervisor replied, “she’s a child,” according to the report.
Residents of the group home noted that Riddle appeared to give the victim extra attention and preferential treatment, police said.
When police contacted Riddle about an interview, he asked if he was under investigation and when he was officially questioned he denied any wrongdoing before requesting to consult with an attorney first, the report says.
The officer then prepared his reports that would be sent to the Idaho Falls Prosecutor’s Office asking that Riddle face two counts of lewd conduct with a child.
An arrest warrant was issued for Riddle and he was taken into custody by Pocatello police officers on Friday. He is currently incarcerated at the Bonneville County Jail in Idaho Falls with a $75,000 bond.
Riddle appeared in front of 7th District Magistrate Judge John Dewey for an arraignment hearing on Tuesday.
He is due back in court on April 30 for a preliminary hearing, during which prosecutors will attempt to prove there is enough evidence against him to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.
Each of the felony lewd conduct charges that Riddle faces carry a maximum penalty of up to life in prison if he is convicted.
