ROCKY HILL, Conn. (WTNH) — Two Connecticut women were arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing a combined total of over $11,000 from public assistance programs.

Carmen Rentas, 33, of Willimantic, and Cardie Dorvil, 29, of Tolland, were both arrested in unrelated incidents, according to the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice.

Officials said Rentas received $5,364 in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits that she was not entitled to from Aug. 25, 2022, to July 31, 2023.

Rentas allegedly underreported her income and did not provide a legally liable relative to receive SNAP benefits, police said. Officials believe she intentionally misled the Connecticut Department of Social Services with the information she submitted.

Rentas was released with a promise to appear in court on April 17 in Danielson.

According to criminal justice officials, Dorvil received $5,920 in SNAP benefits that she was not entitled to from April 1, 2023 – Nov. 30, 2023. The 29-year-old also allegedly did not report her income to receive SNAP benefits and is believed to have intentionally misled the department.

Dorvil was released on a promise to appear in court on April 9 in Rockville.

Both women were charged with first-degree larceny and two counts of second-degree false statement.
