Jaremy Smith, 33, of Marion, is a suspect in the kidnapping and murder of Florence County paramedic Phonesia Machado-Fore and the murder of New Mexico police officer Justin Hare.

Smith was arrested on the morning of March 17 following a deputy-involved shooting in Southwest Albuquerque.

According to 911 dispatch audio, officials were able to locate Smith after a worker at a convenience store recognized him as the suspect wanted for the shooting.

The caller said Smith bought cigarettes from the store and checked his ID which was a South Carolina driver's license. Additionally, she told the dispatcher Smith's name.

A deputy responding to the scene saw Smith and told him to stop. However, Smith began to flee, running through multiple backyards and throwing a handgun over a wall.

Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office released the deputy bodycam footage of the chase. Officials began firing their weapons and hit Smith. He survived the shooting and was detained by deputies.

Machado-Fore was found dead near an abandoned home on Jones Drive in Dillon County on March 15, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. She was last seen at her home on Wildwood Loop in Marion on March 12.

Preliminary autopsy results showed her cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was a homicide, according to Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley.

Officials with the Marion County Sheriff's Office said they were contacted by New Mexico State Police and told that Machado-Fore's BMW was involved in Hare's murder.
