It may be one of the most iconic kisses in film history, but Kirsten Dunst has revealed that the upside-down snog in Spider-Man was “miserable” to film.

The 2002 superhero film saw Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) and Mary Jane Watson (Dunst) share a peck in the rain as Spider-Man hung down from a web, creating an indelible image in modern cinema.

Dunst appeared on The Jonathan Ross Show (via Deadline) to promote her upcoming project, Civil War, and revealed that the scene wasn’t exactly joyful to film.

“I remember [director] Sam Raimi giving me a book of famous kisses to be inspired, but also he really wanted to make it special, even though it was kind of miserable actually doing it,” she remarked. “It was pouring with rain, freezing, Tobey couldn’t breathe so it was almost like I was resuscitating him.”

Dunst and Maguire appeared together in a trilogy of Raimi films, though Spider-Man 3 star Thomas Haden Church recently stated his belief that the director and lead star could reunite for another entry in the franchise.

“There's been some rumours that they might ask me to do another Spider-Man, and I'd do it tomorrow. You know, they've never asked me to show up in another movie, another Marvel film,” he began.

“But, you know, I think Sam is gonna do another Spider-Man with Tobey... They had an option for me to do Spider-Man 4 when there was going to be a Spider-Man 4. They had an option for me to come back. So if it happens, that would be fantastic. I'm getting a little old.”

Whilst Dunst may or may not return as MJ, the star will soon be seen in Alex Garland’s Civil War, with the film following a group of journalists as they travel across a war-torn United States.

Civil War is released in cinemas on April 12.
