HOUSTON (KIAH) — A man is dead after a shootout with Harris County deputies off FM 1960 on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the intersection of FM 1960 and Ella Boulevard.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the man wouldn’t pull over for a traffic stop saying he was a sovereign citizen and held deputies up for about an hour, before speeding off.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez also said the suspect had a possible open felony warrant from Brazoria County.

The chase lasted a couple of minutes before deputies performed a pit maneuver to stop the suspect, investigators said. The suspect then opened fire after the chase with a semi-automatic pistol, which resulted in deputies firing back at the suspect.

A 48-year-old woman who was buying groceries was shot in the chaos. She was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery, Gonzalez said.

A sergeant and three deputies fired the shots, and no deputies were injured, Gonzalez said.
