Chances are you’ve heard the story of the RMS Titanic. On its voyage from the United Kingdom to New York City, the ocean liner hit an iceberg and sank. The wreck, famously dramatized in a 1997 movie, is a real-life event that made headlines  in the early 1900s. The story gained renewed interest earlier this year when a submersible on its way to visit the wreckage imploded, killing all 5 passengers on board.

When did the Titanic sink?

The real-life Titanic sank at 2:20 a.m. April 15, 1912 – only four days into it’s first-ever voyage.

The famed ocean liner took off from Southampton, England.

How many people were on the Titanic?

The ship had just over 2,200 people aboard – a mix of passengers and crew.

How many people died on the Titanic?

Over 1,500 people were killed in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. "RMS" stands for Royal Mail Ship.  

How many people survived the Titanic?

706 people in all survived the sinking, according to History.com. Notably, first-class passengers were 44% more likely to survive, while third-class passengers suffered much greater fatalities.

Who is the ‘Unsinkable Molly Brown’?

Molly Brown was an American socialite and activist who survived the sinking of the Titanic. Her life story was made into a musical and then a feature film entitled “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” starring Debbie Reynolds. Kathy Bates played Brown in 1997's "Titanic."
