DEVASTATION HIT THE COMMUNITY. A SHAWNEE SCHOOL COUNSELOR JUST WON COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR. KOCO IS COLBY TERRELL SPOKE TO THE SCHOOL. THEY SAY THAT SHE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN HELPING STUDENTS AFTER LAST YEAR’S TORNADO. SO BEING THERE TO BEING THAT CALMING VOICE, THAT ENCOURAGING VOICE. BETH MILLS IS A COUNSELOR AT SHAWNEE MIDDLE SCHOOL WHO JUST WON OKLAHOMA SCHOOL COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR AFTER A TUMULTUOUS YEAR, THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW MUCH SHE DESERVES THIS AWARD. SHE’S HELPED STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR COURSES AND FOLLOWS THEM THROUGH EACH GRADE IN MIDDLE SCHOOL, BUT WHEN A TORNADO HIT SHAWNEE AROUND THIS TIME LAST YEAR, SHE HEARD A LITTLE MORE ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT HOME AND LEARNING THAT FAMILIES THERE WHOLE HOUSE WAS NOT LIVABLE. UM, AND MOST OF THEM WERE RENTING. WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER SOMETHING THAT IS HARD ON PEOPLE, THE GOOD RISE TO THE TOP. AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT BETH DID. AND MILLS TELLS ME IT WAS SOMETHING THAT AFFECTED STUDENTS WAY AFTER THE TORNADOES, TOO. WE DO TORNADO DRILLS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. IT HAS A LITTLE BIT OF A DIFFERENT FEEL, BUT ADMINISTRATORS SAY SHE’S ALSO A BIG PART OF THE DISTRICT IN OTHER WAYS. SHE IS A LEADER THAT PEOPLE WANT TO EMULATE IN THEIR COUNSELING VIEWS. AND PROCESSES AND PROCEDURES AND AND SHE IS JUST A LIGHT FOR MANY. I’M SO THANKFUL SHE’S A SHAWNEE WOLF. MILLS SAYS SHE LOVES HER JOB BUT GIVES ALL THE CREDIT TO THE OTHER TEACHERS AND COUNSELORS AROUND HER. MY OTHER TWO COUNSELORS, UM, THE THREE OF US MAKE A SUPER, SUPER
