HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Vietnam War veterans were recognized for their service in a commemorative ceremony for National Vietnam War Veterans Day on Friday in Huntsville.

The Twickenham Town Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) came together to celebrate veterans who served in World War II from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, at the Floyd E. “Tut” Fann State Veterans Home.

Fifty Vietnam War Veterans were presented with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative pin from the Department of Defense.

Twickenham Town, NSDAR Chapter Regent Dr. Dorla Evans, who presided over the ceremony, said the event warranted much-needed appreciation for the individuals who didn’t get the same welcome back as other veterans did.

“It’s very meaningful to those of us that get to shake their hands,” Evans said. “And say on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your service, [it’s] very meaningful.”

The NSDAR also honored two World War II veterans who live at the Tut Fann residence with certificates of appreciation. Robert Brazil was one of the WWII veterans honored and he recalled the appreciation of the community.

“When you have people like this who bring us together and make these awards, it really, really touches us,” Brazil said.
