A Peoria man was indicted on one count of first-degree murder Tuesday for his alleged role in the shooting death of a 27-year-old man last month at an apartment complex.

Javier McGhee, 21, is accused of killing Trashawn W. Morris on March 23 at Lexington Hills Apartments in the 3400 block of West Fallen Oak Lane. A grand jury returned an indictment on the single charge of first-degree murder Tuesday, with Circuit Judge John Vespa slated to preside over the trial.

The indictment says that McGhee, "without lawful justification and intent to kill," shot and killed Morris on the night in question. The Peoria Police Department found Morris dead at the scene, along with another man who was merely grazed and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

McGhee eventually turned himself in two days later and was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery. A petition filed by the Peoria County State's Attorney's Office to hold him in custody until trial was successful and he remains in the Peoria County Jail.

He is next slated to appear in court on April 18 at 1:30 p.m., with Vespa presiding over the proceedings.
