A microwave fire in a Forest Hill apartment Wednesday caused about $50,000 in damage, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

At 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company responded to the 200 block of Kilmary Court for a building fire, the fire marshal said in a news release. It took about 25 firefighters minutes to control the blaze.

A neighbor heard a smoke alarm and later discovered someone inside the apartment, which had heavy smoke, the release said. Another neighbor helped the occupant out of the apartment.  The occupant was transported to a hospital for evaluation.

One fire sprinkler activated and contained the fire to the area around the microwave, according to the release.

Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray said the incident underlines the value of fire sprinklers.

“Residential fire sprinklers are proven to save lives, prevent injuries, and protect property and valuables,” Mowbray said in the release. “This is yet another example of how the presence of an automatic fire sprinkler system protected occupants and prevented substantial fire damage to residential property.”
