Pedestrian in critical condition after being struck by vehicle in Portage

A 29-year-old Kalamazoo resident was taken to the hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Portage Monday evening, according to the Portage Department of Public Safety.

A 30-year-old Kalamazoo resident was driving south on S. Westnedge Avenue near Milham Avenue around 6:13 p.m. in a 2016 Jeep Patriot when a pedestrian walked off the sidewalk and in the way of the vehicle, police said.

The pedestrian was taken to Bronson Hospital and is in critical condition, according to authorities.

Police do not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash.

This incident remains under investigation by the Portage Department of Public Safety, and anyone with information is asked to call 269-329-4567, or Silent Observer at 269-343-2100.
