Readers have said 'not a chance' as Coventry council urges locals to sign up to its paid-for garden waste collection service. The city council said that 'serious funding pressures' led to the decision to introduce a yearly fee of £40 for brown bin collections.

It will be following suit of neighbouring Nuneaton and Bedworth as well as North Warwickshire Borough Council, which already charge for a similar service. The council has now urged people to sign up for the scheme.

The new collections are due to start on Monday, June 3 but many CoventryLive readers have said that they will not be signing up to it. On our page on Facebook, Karen Ward simply posted: "Not a chance'.

Kathleen Ridley added: "They can take our brown bin back because I’m not paying £40 to get it emptied they are just robbing people of their money." Lynne Carol Proctor asked what else the council will ask people to pay for saying: "It's disgusting makes you wonder what else they will charge us for next."

Concerns about the impact of the loss of the free service were raised by Leigh Mead, who said: "How to encourage more fly tipping" and Terry Johnston said: " It’s going to cost a lot of money in street cameras to control any local fly tipping in the streets/back allays where people live.

But not everyone was opposed to it however, Rene Green said they have trouble trying to sign up. "Have tried but cannot get on there website. Always unavailable," she posted.

While CovKid 2 said: "I always fill my brown bin and will be paying the charge however much I disagree with it. I'll be storing it in my back garden until collection day though."

The council has said that there are a number of ways people can pay for the permit including in person at the Customer Service Centre in Upper Precinct.

“Sign up through our website at: https://orlo.uk/IqWjO, call 0808 5834 333 or pay in person using cash, cheque or card at the Customer Service Centre in Upper Precinct," the council said.
