With intriguing new shows like Stranger Things, The Handmaid's Tale and This Is Us, and Game of Thrones ineligible due to timing, the 2017 Emmys Awards will pit a fresh cast of monster-fighting kids against dystopian feminist heroes and the world's most lovable triplets. This year saw a record number of submissions (180) for drama series, with 140 best drama actor submissions and 113 best drama actress submissions. These acting categories, too, hold new excitement, as competitors include some of the multi-Emmy Award winners and Oscar-nominees who have flocked to premium cable channels and streaming services in the past year.
Anna Chlumsky, the Veep star and four-time Emmy nominee, took the stage with Criminal Minds alum and daytime Emmy winner Shemar Moore at 11:30 am EST/ 8:30 am PDT to announce the nominees for the 69th annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
The 2017 Emmys will be hosted by Stephen Colbert and air at 8 pm EST/5 pm PDT on September 17 on CBS. Here are the shows, actors and writers battling it out for television's top prizes.
