"The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children," the actress says on SiriusXM's 'Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend'

Goldie Hawn is pinpointing exactly what it was about Kurt Russell that sold her on him.

The actress is a guest on SiriusXM’s Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend's April 15 episode. In PEOPLE's exclusive first look at the conversation, Hawn, 78, recalls how she fell for Russell, 73, her costar in the 1987 comedy Overboard.

Hawn remembers going to lunch with Russell in Los Angeles for a business meeting alongside producers and feeling "very attracted to him."

"We sat together and it was really great. And then we left ... and he turned around — and it was so romantic. He turned around and said across the room, 'It's okay if I don't get this part, but I sure would like to see you again.' "

"That was really interesting," she continues, "but what really caught me was that he came over to my place at the beach. I had my two little children there, I had Oliver and Katie. Katie was about 4, just going on? And Oliver was 6. He went over to the bedroom where they were sleeping and he looked for a long time at Katie sleeping. And then he went over and looked at Oliver, long time."

Hawn says she watched Russell quietly observing her kids and thought to herself, "You're amazing."

"He is a family man, he in-depth looked at them, stared at them, felt them," she says. "Then we went in the other room and we talked, and then we went to work. And when my children visited me on the set — I can't explain it, but he was the one for me."

"It wasn't just because he was sexy and handsome and all of those things you get turned on by; it was because he matched my devotion to children to be number one," recalls Hawn. "The seduction was really his personality and his focus on the children."

She remembers that when she was going through her divorce (with ex Bill Hudson) she wrote in her diary, "I wonder if I'll ever find someone that will love my children the way I do." She says, "And it happened."

"The sticking glue of our relationship — 'cause we don't agree on everything, his politics are different than mine, you know, there's all these things that could divide you. But the one thing that we have, the greatest thing in God's world, is our family," Hawn says in the clip. "That is where we thrive and where we have incredible amounts of joy and really focus on that."

Hawn and Russell, a longtime couple who never officially married, have a family that includes actors Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, plus Boston Russell (whom Kurt welcomed with ex-wife Season Hubley) and their actor son Wyatt Russell.
