Step into the gritty world of 1950s rock ‘n’ roll with “Million Dollar Quartet,” a sensational musical extravaganza that brings together some of the most iconic figures in music history: Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins.

Presented by Musical Theatre West at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, this electrifying production directed by Tim Seib promises an evening of nostalgia, laughter, and toe-tapping tunes that will leave audiences exhilarated and uplifted.

From the moment the curtain rises, the stage is alive with the infectious energy of rockabilly rhythm and blues. LJ Benet embodies the swagger and charisma of Elvis Presley, capturing the essence of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll with uncanny precision.

David Elkin Simpson channels the deep, resonant voice and brooding intensity of Johnny Cash, delivering powerhouse performances of classics like “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I Walk the Line.” Garrett Forrestal dazzles as the flamboyant piano virtuoso Jerry Lee Lewis, his fingers flying across the keys in a frenzy of musical brilliance. Will Riddle completes the quartet with his portrayal of the talented guitarist Carl Perkins, whose person may not be the most memorable but Mr. Riddles virtuosity with the guitar sure is!

The chemistry among the cast members is palpable, infusing each scene with humor, warmth, and camaraderie. Summer Nicole Green shines as Dyanne, a fictional girlfriend of Elvis, adding a touch of glamour and powerful vocals to the proceedings, while Adam Poole brings depth and gravitas to the role of Sam Phillips, the legendary record producer who brought these four musical titans together for one unforgettable jam session.

But it’s not just the performances that make “Million Dollar Quartet” a must-see event. The production values are top-notch, with Derick McLanes delightfully grimy little recording studio meticulously crafted from an auto parts store that transports audiences back to the humble beginnings of rock ‘n’ roll.

Seib deserves praise for his masterful staging, balancing the intimate moments of musical camaraderie with the larger-than-life personalities of the characters. Lighting Designer Brandon Baruch brings a sense of dynamism and energy to the production, with lively lighting for the big showstoppers that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. And music director David Lamoureux ensures that every note is pitch-perfect, capturing the raw energy and emotion of the original recordings.

As the music fills the theater, it’s impossible not to be swept away by the sheer joy and exuberance of the performances. Hits like “Hound Dog,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Sixteen Tons” are delivered with passion and gusto, eliciting cheers and applause from the audience. And yet, amid all the excitement and spectacle, there are moments of quiet reflection, as the characters grapple with their own hopes, dreams, and insecurities.

In many ways, “Million Dollar Quartet” is a celebration of the American dream – a testament to the power of music to transcend barriers of race, class, and background. It’s a reminder that, no matter how divided we may seem, there’s always common ground to be found in the universal language of song.

As the final chords  fade away, the audience rises to its feet in a thunderous ovation, applauding not just the performers on stage, but the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll itself. For in that moment, we are all united by the magic of music – and the belief that, no matter what challenges may come our way, as long as we have each other and the songs in our hearts, we can overcome anything.

So don’t miss your chance to experience the magic of “Million Dollar Quartet” at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center.
