A Penn Manor High School student faces criminal charges after bringing a BB gun to school April 5.

The unidentified student has been charged with disorderly conduct/weapons violation, according to the Millersville Borough Police Department.

Millersville Borough police Chief Jeff Margevich said the school first heard about the gun when someone submitted a complaint on Safe2SaySomething, an online service run by the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General through which students, parents and staff can submit tips and concerns about potential youth violence.

The school found the student in the cafeteria around noon. Initial reports said the student had a knife, but when the assistant principal confronted the student, he could see the butt of the gun in the waistband of his sweatpants, according to Margevich. The student did not have a knife, was cooperative and was kept in the office until his parents picked him up.

Independent of the criminal charge against him, the school board will determine whether to suspend or expel the student, Margevich said. The school acted quickly, he said, and there were no reports of injuries or threats made by the student.

District spokesman Brian Wallace said the student is “out of school” and parents in the district were notified of the problem via email. He said the Safe2SaySomething notification worked well and was a help to the school in stopping the student.

Wallace said the student will face additional consequences pending the outcome of a school board disciplinary hearing.
