He responded to Sen. John Kennedy’s (R-LA) questions on whether he was purposely allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country to help President Biden’s reelection prospects, which the secretary called “preposterous.” Also, Subcommittee Chair Chris Murphy (D-CT), criticized congressional Republicans for not holding any votes on a bipartisan border security bill he helped negotiate. The bill stopped being considered after former President Donald Trump, the 2024 Republican presidential presumptive nominee, told fellow Republicans he wanted to run on the issue of immigration. This hearing came one month after Secretary Mayorkas was impeached by the Republican-led House of Representatives for his alleged mishandling of the border. The Democratic-led Senate had yet to consider an impeachment trial.
