OLYMPIA, Wash. – National Park Week will celebrate America’s national parks starting on Saturday.
On June 8, 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt signed the National Monument Act, the first federal policy which legally designated land of public interest. Also called the Antiquities Act, it set the foundation for the creation of hundreds of national parks and wildlife refuges.
The National Park Service (NPS) was founded with President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of the Organic Act in 1916, which designated the service as the new custodian of US parks and monuments.
National Park Week 2024 will take place from April 20 to 28 and will highlight America's 429 parks.
NPS will celebrate the week with several opportunities including park entrance fees being waved across the country on Saturday.
Celebrations will coincide with Earth Day, which will give the Park Service the opportunity to highlight the importance of natural conservation and stewardship.
