Grimsby's Danny Rose closes down Newport's Matt Baker — Danny Rose's goal was his 15th of the season

Grimsby Town boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation from League Two as Danny Rose's goal secured victory over Newport County.

Skipper Rose steered home from inside the penalty area as Newport suffered a fourth straight defeat.

Grimsby had a number of chances to extend their lead, with Rose and Donovan Wilson denied by fine Nick Townsend saves.

But the Mariners held on for a first win in five games.

Grimsby now sit five points clear of the bottom two, with Newport dropping to 16th having seen their disappointing run continue.

Offrande Zanzala had the Exiles' best opportunity before the break but sent his header off target.

Newport manager Graham Coughlan:

"We weren't good enough. We make a mistake at the back, similar to last week, they were sharper, they get in and put the ball in the back of the net. We didn't, they did.

"They looked like they had a cause, their cause was probably greater than our cause today. Fair play to them.

"It's sad looking at some of our players, where they were to where they are now. Unfortunately I don't think we were good enough today.

"We were probably lucky it was only one. It's not a nice place to be at this moment but we have four games left and we'll see what the future holds for a number of these players."

Mmmm... Newport through n through.. don’t quite understand why Grimsby are scrapping near relegation.. I thought you played as well as any side I’ve seen this season, certainly mid to upper table.. must be something I am not seeing....

Hope you manage to stay in the League Grimsby (Mariners) you came to league 2 with us SCFC after you beat Disney fc (Wrexham) in the Playoffs and wish you the best of luck for the rest of rhe season and gud luck next season in league 2 from a Stockport fan

Massive result for Grimsby with the other three relegation contenders all losing, albeit with matches against the top three teams. Still a long way to go potentially. Grimsby’s better goal difference could be crucial.

Matters are slipping away from Newport, whose poor recent form has developed into four straight defeats. There doesn't appear to be any kind of rhyme nor reason to their play and the honest truth is they did extremely well to punch above their weight for so long.

County have avoided the relegation scrap so job done this season. With HJ on board, reasons to be optimistic going forward. Good luck to the Mariners

A good win for Grimsby with all those around and immediately above them losing. Their biggest challenge is scoring more than 1 goal to close out the game. May just be enough to see them safe albeit 4 of remaining five games are away from home.
