STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for March, and some jobs pay more than others.

The application period for exams opened March 6.

Exam applications currently open include: associate housing development specialist; city tax auditor; civil engineer; computer systems manager; graphic artist; instrumentation specialist; labor relations analyst; mate (ferry); quality assurance specialist; social worker; special officer; special officer (NYC H+H).

Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).

The deadline for exams is March 26.

Here are the starting salaries, deadlines and job descriptions for each career, according to the city.

Associate housing development specialist

Salary: $81,571

Application deadline: March 26

Job description: Associate Housing Development Specialists, under direction, perform very complex and responsible analytical or coordination work related to the development, and/or implementation of housing programs designed to preserve and upgrade neighborhoods, or to improve urban renewal areas or public and private housing; may supervise subordinate staff; may perform the duties of subordinate personnel; and may perform the duties of the supervisor in his/her absence.

City tax auditor

Salary: $49,640

Job description: City TaxAuditors, under supervision, perform professional tax auditing work to ensure that taxpayers are in compliance with tax laws and regulations.

Civil engineer

Salary: $74,041

Job description: Civil Engineers, under general supervision, perform responsible supervisory work, or difficult and responsible work in civil engineering. They perform the usual duties of a section engineer in charge of a major design section, major field engineering section, or the equivalent; plan, assign and review the work of subordinates, prepare progress reports, and may represent an agency in relations with City agencies, contractors and their representatives, damage claimants, consultants or their representatives, and the general public; engage in, or supervise the conducting of complex and important research, investigations, studies or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of a department or agency; prepare, or supervise the preparation of, the basic design plan, or significant or complex portions thereof, for major projects for construction, remodeling, operation, maintenance or repair of public works, structures or installations; among other duties.

Computer systems manager

Salary: Salaries will be commensurate with the level of responsibility of the managerial assignment and will be consistent with the Managerial Pay Plan.

Job description: Computer Systems Managers, under varying levels of managerial or executive direction, with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative, judgment, and decision making, perform difficult and responsible professional managerial work in the planning, organizing, and controlling of the overall activities of a major Information Technology (IT) facility. In an agency with an IT activity of a sufficient size, complexity, and/or volume, Computer Systems Managers manage the day-to-day activities of a large computer operation, serve as principal assistants to an IT manager, head one or more units responsible for a major operating function, and/or act as immediate deputies to the head of a very large IT operation. Computer System Managers may also lead a very large IT program overseeing all major components of that program, head a development of a complex computer system, and/or serve as a head of the whole IT department.

Graphic artist

Salary: $49,822

Job description: Graphic Artists under varying degrees of supervision, and with some latitude for independent action and judgment, perform technical and creative work in the design, layout, presentation, and illustration of materials, and interpret informational data in graphic form; use a variety of media and tools, including specialized computer graphics programs and computer-driven tools. There are two Assignment Levels in this class of positions.

Instrumentation specialist

Salary: $58,615

Job description: At Assignment Level I, Instrumentation Specialists, under general supervision, install and set-up instruments, controls and telemetering equipment and related equipment; make periodic inspections of instrumentation and metering equipment and controls and report unusual malfunctions, perform routine preventive maintenance; dismantle and reassemble equipment for corrective maintenance or for replacement in whole or in part, may work with other personnel to facilitate the repair and replacement of components; operate testing and calibrating equipment such as the following: analog and digital multimeters, frequency meters, signal simulators for resistive temperature devices, millivolt, milliamp, frequency oscilloscope and pressure transmitters, chlorine residual analyzers, pH meters, vehicle exhaust emissions analyzers, and other diagnostic equipment; install, maintain, repair and perform other servicing routines required to assure continuous radio, phone and telemetry system operations; troubleshoot and configure equipment and systems; among other duties.

Labor relations analyst

Salary: $49,762

Job description: Labor Relations Analyst Trainees under supervision, with some latitude for independent judgment, receive training in and assist in professional research and analysis of labor/management issues for collective bargaining purposes in a City government agency or the NYC Department of Education.

Mate (ferry)

Salary: $70,268

Job description: Mates (Ferry), under direction, supervise an assigned crew of deckhands on a municipal ferry vessel, in compliance with agency standard operating procedures, the Safety Management System (SMS), the Combined Safety Plan (CSP), and applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations. They ensure that crew members perform their duties in compliance with agency standard operating procedures, the CSP, applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and the needs of their duty stations; ensure the safe embarking and disembarking of passengers and the loading and unloading of authorized vehicles on a ferry vessel in accordance with the CSP; assign deckhands to duty stations and posts lookouts; ensure that deckhands are familiar with watch station bill requirements and duty assignments; instruct deckhands in general seamanship; instruct deckhands in shipboard safety and lookout procedures, including, but not limited to: fire-fighting, man overboard, first aid, vessel to vessel transfer, abandon ship procedures, the SMS and the CSP; under the supervision and direction of the Captain, serve as deck officer in charge on scene in emergencies and during lifeboat, anchor deployment, and abandon ship drills; participate in safety and vessel security meetings, under the supervision and direction of the Captain, as well as fire and lifeboat drills; serve as helmsman, radar observer, and member of the navigational watch, as assigned by the Captain; are responsible for the safety and care of floating property of the agency; ensure the vessel is maintained in a clean and sanitary condition while in service; prepare incident, accident, and safety reports and requests for repairs, as required; perform vessel safety checks prior to getting underway; perform other safety checks at the direction of the Captain or as deemed necessary; and assist the Captain as needed.

Quality assurance specialist

Salary: $47,885

Job description: Quality Assurance Specialists, under supervision, determine the acceptability of various supplies, materials, and products to ensure adherence to purchase or contract specifications, terms, conditions and related regulations; and may operate a motor vehicle in performance of duties.

Social worker

Salary: $55,816

Job description: Social Workers, under supervision with some latitude for independent judgment and decision making, provide psycho-social services in such settings as social services centers, jails and prisons, healthcare and shelter facilities; provide services to individual clients/patients, or to families and/or other groups of adults/children, utilizing casework, group work or community organization methodologies; or perform program evaluation or social work planning for the agency.

Special officer

Salary: $36,955

Job description: Special Officers, under supervision, perform Special Officer work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility relating to physical security, safety, loss prevention and maintenance of order. They patrol designated areas of public buildings, other facilities, and surrounding areas to maintain order, preserve the peace, and safeguard life and property against fire, vandalism, theft, etc.; give routine information to visitors and clients and direct them to the proper individuals and offices; discourage and eject loiterers and disorderly persons and when appropriate, arrest and issue summonses to law violators on premises; transport, escort and/or arrange for transport of persons in custody to police precincts and have arrests recorded on police blotter; prepare and transmit all necessary documents relating to arrests; testify in court on arrests; report security instances and unusual occurrences by telephone or radio and make subsequent written reports; as required, provide assistance to the sick, injured, mentally and physically disabled, and call for ambulances and/or medical attention when necessary and complete and forward forms; record daily actions in memo book; maintain records of persons entering or leaving building; keep bulletin board in their area current by adding and removing materials; may make clock rounds as required; may control vehicular traffic on grounds and/or premises; may operate a motor vehicle; monitor and report unusual events from security systems as required; distribute and maintain accountability for designated equipment or property; monitor and control access by the means of electronic security measures, such as closed circuit television; access control readers; may operate hydraulic access devices; attend, complete, and maintain training requirements as per State and Agency mandates; make written entries into location log book; and perform related work

Special officer (NYC H+H)

Salary: $36,955
