NYC civil service exam: Here are the salaries for positions open in April

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for April, and some jobs pay more than others.

The application period for exams opened April 3.

Exam applications currently open include: call center representative; claims specialist; crime analyst; environmental police officer inspector (hoists and rigging); inspector (plumbing); police officer; recreation director; stationary engineer (electric).

Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System (OASys) or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers (CTAC).

The deadline for most exams is April 23. The deadline to apply for call center representative is May 21, while the deadline to apply for police officer is June 28.

Here are the starting salaries, deadlines and job descriptions for each career, according to the city.

Call center representative

Salary: $38,336

Application deadline: May 21

Job description: Call Center Representatives, under supervision, in the Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) New York City 24-hour 3-1-1 Call Center, provide a single point of contact for all non-emergency City services utilizing state-ofthe-art telephone and interactive computer systems, respond to phone inquiries from the public, provide customer service and information to callers, take complaints and service requests and forward them for further action; enter inquiries, complaints and requests into appropriate computer systems, and perform related clerical and computer support work.

Claims specialist

Salary: $45,329

Application deadline: April 23

Job description: Claim Specialists perform work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility in the investigation, negotiation and adjustment of claims involving the City or one of its public authorities conducting oral examinations for statutory hearings and utilizing manual, automated and computerized office systems as an integral part of these duties.

Crime analyst

Salary: $59,867

Job description: Crime Analysts, under supervision, with considerable latitude for independent action, perform complex, confidential, and sensitive research and analysis of crime and criminal activity data; identify patterns in criminal activity by utilizing state of the art database applications, spreadsheet applications, and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology; use spatial analysis techniques to produce thematic overlays; conduct demographic analysis; utilize qualitative and quantitative analytical tools to assist the agency in designing tactical and operational initiatives; and determine the appropriate allocation of personnel and other critical agency resources for crime prevention. In the absence of the immediate supervisor, Crime Analysts may perform the duties of that position

Environmental police officer

Salary: $49,210

Job description: Environmental Police Officers perform and supervise staff performing duties involved in protecting the watershed areas, water supply systems and installations maintained by the Department of Environmental Protection of the City of New York; enforce the City’s Watershed Rules and Regulations and other laws; and perform special duties or assignments as may be directed by superior officers. Environmental Police Officers operate motor vehicles and may perform aerial reconnaissance.

Inspector (hoists and rigging)

Salary: $60,285

Job description: Inspectors (Hoists and Rigging) under general supervision, perform technical work in the inspection of the condition and safety of cranes, machinery, and equipment used in hoisting and rigging for conformance to codes, rules, laws, plans or specifications. They inspect and may test slings, ropes, cables, blocks, poles, derricks, outriggers, cableways, cranes, lifting devices and other associated appurtenances for safety conditions; inspect hoist machines and all related hoisting equipment for conformance to codes, rules, laws, plans or specifications and safety of operation; respond to, report and investigate accidents, incidents and complaints; issue violations, summonses, and stop-work orders; verify licenses of onsite workers, including licensed riggers and hoisting machine operators; patrol district to observe hoisting and rigging operations; testify as needed, study technical drawings of cranes, machinery and equipment used in hoisting and rigging to obtain details for inspections; maintain records and make reports; may train, assign, supervise, review and evaluate work of subordinates; may assist supervisor; and may operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.

Inspector (plumbing)

Salary: $54,670

Job description: Inspectors (Plumbing), under general supervision, perform technical work in the inspection of plumbing installations, repairs or alterations for comformance to codes, rules, laws, plans or specifications. There are four assignment levels within this class of positions. Inspectors (plumbing) receive training in and, under close supervision, perform technical work in the inspection of plumbing installations, investigate complaints of violations of the plumbing code, report and investigate accidents and incidents, issue violations, summonses, and stop work orders, and conduct repairs or alterations for comformance to codes, rules, laws, plans or specifications.

Police officer

Salary: $53,790

Job description: Police Officers perform general police duties and related work in the New York City Police Department including connecting and building relationships with the community. They patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to prevent crime; apprehend crime suspects; intervene in various situations involving crimes in progress, aided cases, complaints, emotionally disturbed persons, etc.; respond to and investigate vehicular accidents; investigate specific offenses; interact with prisoners; operate and maintain patrol vehicles; issue summonses; obtain information regarding incidents by interviewing witnesses, victims, and/or complainants; safeguard and voucher found, seized or recovered property; provide information to the public; handle situations involving maltreated, abused, or missing children; interact with juveniles; may be assigned to crowd control for large-scale events such as demonstrations, rallies and parades; prepare forms and reports; and testify in court.

Recreation director

Salary: $45,523

Job description: Recreation Directors under supervision, with some latitude for independent action or decision, are responsible for programs of recreational activities in a playground, neighborhood play area, institution or similar unit.

Stationary engineer (electric)

Salary: $72.92 per hour, for a 40-hour work week

Job description: Stationary Engineers (Electric), under general supervision, operate, inspect, maintain, and adjust high and/or low voltage electrically powered plant equipment including diesel engines. They operate, inspect, maintain, repair, test and adjust equipment such as: generators, pumps, transformers, electric motors, bearings, switchboards, controllers, compressors, meters, gauges, valves, fittings, heating apparatus, converters, rectifiers, controls, circuit breakers, etc; operate dual and tri-fuel engines, generators, pumps, blowers, high tension switchboards and electrical equipment (permanent and portable); oil, clean, and make minor repairs to this equipment; read meters, gauges, and recording devices; keep records; prepare reports; take responsible charge of a watch, and while so engaged are responsible for and direct subordinate personnel; instruct and guide subordinates and other personnel; oversee the corrective and preventive maintenance of equipment and structures; perform inspections and assessments of assigned facility; may monitor telemetry of Collection System Operations; direct operations to prevent bypassing; maintain combined sewer overflow retention facilities, inflatable dam in-line storage facilities, and in-situ aeration of water bodies; and may operate a motor vehicle.
