ATLANTA (AP) — Georgians will owe less in income taxes this year and will get a chance in November to vote to cap increases in how homes are valued for property taxes.

Republican Gov. Brian Kemp on Thursday signed measures cutting income taxes by a projected $700 million on residents and businesses. The income tax cuts are retroactive to Jan. 1.

A Pennsylvania nurse who administered lethal or potentially lethal doses of insulin to numerous patients has pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and other charges and been sentenced to life in prison. Forty-one-year-old Heather Pressdee was given three consecutive life sentences and another consecutive term of 380-760 years behind bars during a hearing Thursday in Butler, north of Pittsburgh. Prosecutors say she played a role in the deaths of at least 17 patients who lived in five health facilities in four counties between 2020 and 2023. Authorities say coworkers often questioned Pressdee’s conduct and said she frequently showed disdain for her patients and made derogatory comments about them.

Wisconsin’s offensive linemen understand what’s expected at a program that prides itself on dominating the trenches. The Badgers haven't quite met that standard lately. Right tackle Riley Mahlman says that "in the past few years, I think we’ve been a good o-line. I don’t think we’ve been necessarily great.” An issue is a lack of stability. A.J. A Texas man who made an online threat of a mass attack on a convention of young conservative activists in Florida in 2022 was sentenced to five years in federal prison. Federal prosecutors said 20-year-old Alejandro Richard Velasquez Gomez of San Antonio posted a threat on social media to attack the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit in Tampa. Turning Point is a Donald Trump-aligned group that organizes young people on college campuses into conservative activism. Velasquez pleaded guilty in 2023 to a charge of interstate threatening communication and was sentenced Wednesday.

A soccer politics dispute between Algeria and Morocco over a map of disputed Western Sahara territory on a team jersey will go to a full appeal hearing at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The court set no timetable for appointing a panel of judges and setting a date for a hearing. The Algerian soccer federation and USM Alger club are challenging a Confederation of African Football decision to let Moroccan club RS Berkane wear team jerseys that includes disputed territory on a map of Morocco. Alger forfeited both semifinal games against Berkane in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Serbian lawmakers have voted into office a new government that reinstated two pro-Russia officials who are sanctioned by the United States. The move on Thursday reflected persistent close ties with Moscow despite the Balkan nation’s proclaimed bid to join the European Union. Prime Minister Miloš Vučević’s government got backing in a 152-61 vote in the 250-member parliament. The remaining 37 lawmakers were absent. The government includes former intelligence chief Aleksandar Vulin as one of several vice premiers along with Nenad Popović who is another Russia supporter who has faced U.S. sanctions.

Iga Swiatek has cruised to a straight-set win over Madison Keys to reach the Madrid Open final for the second consecutive year. Top-ranked Swiatek beat 20th-ranked Keys 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday. The Madrid Open is the only high-profile European clay competition that Swiatek is yet to win. It will be the third final of the year for Swiatek after titles in Indian Wells and Doha. Swiatek will face world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka or No. 4 Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka defeated Swiatek in the Madrid final last year.

Paris Saint-Germain defender Lucas Hernandez will have surgery after rupturing the ACL on his left knee. It almost certainly rules him out of playing for France at the European Championship. Hernandez was injured on Wednesday night during the Champions League semifinal first leg against Borussia Dortmund. PSG says he underwent a scan and the 28-year-old Hernandez will have surgery in the coming days. Euro 2024 takes place in Germany from June 14. France coach Didier Deschamps names his squad on May 16. Hernandez played just eight minutes at the 2022 World Cup after rupturing the ACL in his right knee.

Victor Wembanyama will return to Paris, he hopes as an Olympic champion, when the San Antonio Spurs face the Indiana Pacers in two regular-season NBA games early next year. The NBA announced that the teams will play on Jan. 23 and Jan. 25, marking the first time two regular-season games will be held in Paris in the same season. Wembanyama was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft, when the 7-foot-4 Frenchman joined the Spurs from Paris-based team Boulogne-Levallois. Wembanyama is expected be one of the stars at the Paris Olympics, where France hopes to win the gold medal for the first time after losing to the United States in the final in Tokyo.

When Jessica Pratt released her debut self-titled album in 2011, the singer-songwriter was critically praised for her austere guitar and hypnotic voice. She says it had virually no post-production. The album’s imperfections were a feature rather than a drawback. It should come as no surprise then that the indie musician is proceeding with caution as she embraces a more complex and refined sound on her fourth album, out Friday. A Texas school board has accepted a voluntary separation agreement with its superintendent who was suspended after removing a transgender student from a role in the musical “Oklahoma!” The board did not reveal the terms of the settlement it agreed to Wednesday with Tyson Bennett. The board in November apologized and reinstated 17-year-old Max Hightower and the remainder of the original cast after a public outcry in the city near the Oklahoma border and about 65 miles north of Dallas. Hightower's father has said school officials told them the cast changes that included replacing some girls were due to a new school policy that only males play males and females play females.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been suspended for two months for breaching English soccer’s betting rules. Tonali is already serving a 10-month ban issued by the Italian federation for betting on teams he played for. That has ruled him out of action since October. The English Football Association says Tonali admitted to breaching its rules on 50 occasions by placing bets on matches last year. He self-reported these breaches on Oct. 20 and also admitted to betting on four Newcastle matches but always on his team to win.

Both sides of I-95, the East Coast’s main north-south highway, have been shut down in southwestern Connecticut. It follows an early morning crash Thursday involving a passenger car, tractor trailer truck and a tanker truck carrying 8,500 gallons of gasoline, which caught fire under a bridge overpass. Connecticut Ned Lamont says there were no serious injuries. However, he's warning drivers of massive traffic jams near the Norwalk crash site and urged people to avoid the area or stay home. State officials say the bridge was damaged but they're unsure the level of damage given the high temperature of the fire.Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut and New York, and trucking companies were notified to find alternative routes and means of travel.

The English Premier League fears a new “banking-style” regulator could damage the competitiveness of the world’s most popular league. League chief executive Richard Masters has also raised concerns that proposed government measures will impact the league's value and deter investment into a competition that earns billions of pounds through the sale of broadcast rights across the globe. The U.K. government plans to establish an independent football regulator who will be charged with ensuring the financial sustainability of clubs and leagues in England. It is proposed each club will require a licence to operate and there will be strengthened tests over who can own a team, as well as enhanced financial regulation.

Rarely has the Giro d’Italia had such an overwhelming pre-race favorite. Tadej Pogačar is competing in his first Italian grand tour. He is attempting an audacious Giro-Tour de France double. The two-time Tour champion has been in dominant form since the start of the year. Three of Pogačar's major rivals in titleholder Primož Roglič, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel will not be at the Giro. Last year’s runner-up Geraint Thomas is expected to be his main challenger in the three-week race that starts on Saturday in Turin and ends in Rome on May 26.

Prince William and his wife, Kate, have marked their daughter Charlotte’s 9th birthday by posting a picture of her smiling for the camera as she posed near a plant with pink flowers. Ukrainian energy workers are struggling to repair the damage from intensifying airstrikes aimed at pulverizing Ukraine’s energy grid. They worry they will lose the race to prepare for winter unless allies come up with air-defense systems to stop Russian missiles from reaching their targets. At one plant that was damaged last week, manager Oleh says there is one thing they need most: Patriot missiles. The Associated Press on Thursday visited an energy plant days after it was damaged in a cruise-missile attack. Owner DTEK says it has lost 80% of its electricity-generating capacity in almost 180 aerial attacks. It says repairing the damaged plants would take between six months and two years, even if there are no more strikes.

The Philadelphia 76ers are trying to keep New York Knicks fans out of Wells Fargo Arena for Game 6 of their NBA playoff series Thursday night. Team owners Josh Harris, David Blitzer and David Adelman and former minority owner Michael Rubin bought more than 2,000 tickets they planned to hand out to people who serve the Philadelphia community as long as the recipients pledge they are not Knicks fans. Wells Fargo Arena seemed more like Madison Square Garden South during the Knicks’ 97-92 win on Sunday, prompting 76ers star Joel Embiid to express frustration about the home-court disadvantage.

The final cost of the Mets’ sorry 2023 season has been totaled: $420 million. Major League Baseball finalized its payroll figures for last year, and New York finished at a record $319.5 million. In addition to the payroll, New York paid a record luxury tax of $100.8 million after finishing 75-87. The Mets topped the previous payroll high of $291.1 million by the 2015 Los Angeles Dodgers. The three-highest spenders all missed the playoffs. The New York Yankees were second at $283.8 million, followed by San Diego at $257.2 million. World Series champion Texas was sixth at $241.1 million.

The rate of businesses in the U.S. using AI is still relatively small but growing rapidly. A new paper by U.S. Census Bureau researchers says overall use of AI by businesses in the U.S. rose from 3.7% last fall to 5.4% in February. Leading the way were firms in information technology and professional services, and in locations like Colorado and the District of Columbia. The researchers say there have been few reports of workers being laid off because of AI. Instead, firms are expanding to train staff and purchase related services. The rate of AI use among sectors varied, from 1.4% in construction to 18.1% in information technology

Police in Fort Worth, Texas, says four children are among six people wounded in a drive-by shooting at an apartment complex that Police Chief Neil Noakes called stupid. Police officer Brad Perez says the six were shot about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and five were taken to a hospital while one refused treatment. Their conditions were not released and Perez said Thursday that police were still gathering information about the shooting. Perez said late Wednesday that the wounded range in age from 3 to 19 and that they were shot by someone in a vehicle that drove by them while they were outside the apartments. No arrests have been announced.
