Passenger killed, 2 drivers critically injured in Muncie crash during Henry County police chase

The crash happened around 6:15 a.m. Thursday near West McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue.

MUNCIE, Ind. — One person was killed in a crash in Muncie Thursday morning during a police chase that started in Henry County.

According to Muncie Police Deputy Chief Melissa Criswell, Henry County officials notified Delaware County dispatchers around 6 a.m. April 18 of a Henry County deputy pursuing a vehicle entering Delaware County and into the city limits of Muncie.

The deputy had tried to stop the driver of a Dodge Dart for a traffic violation and suspicion of impaired driving on State Road 3, near Henry County Road 950 North. The driver reportedly fled from the deputy and drove into Delaware County.

The crash was reported around 6:15 a.m. at the intersection of West McGalliard Road and Tillotson Avenue on the northwest side of Muncie. The driver of the Dart reportedly ran a red light and collided with a white Jeep that was traveling north on Tillotson Avenue.

Criswell confirmed a passenger in the suspect vehicle, later identified as 25-year-old Nicholas Wollum, of Muncie, died in the crash. Criswell also said medics took the suspect and the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

Indiana State Police and Muncie Police are now involved in the crash investigation, he said. Criswell said Muncie police officers were not involved in the pursuit.
