Florida Panhandle wildfire destroys 1 home, damages 15 others

PENSACOLA, Florida: A wildfire in the Florida Panhandle, which broke out last week near Pensacola, has destroyed one home and damaged at least 15 others.

The Florida Forest Service said the fire was now more than 60 percent contained over 50 acres (20 hectares). No injuries were reported.

Before summer brings humidity and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast, spring is usually the wildfire season in the state's southeast.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and is being investigated.

In parts of Escambia County north of Pensacola Naval Air Station, homes were evacuated on Thursday, and some people were sheltered overnight in a church.

The Florida Forest Service used bulldozers and plows to cut fire lines, and crews patrolled the perimeter.

In an interview with the Pensacola News Journal, Blackwater Forestry Center's Operations Administrator David Smith said, "They are continuing to mop up around some of the homes that are showing some heat nearby. But there are no threats at this time."

A separate fire to the west near Pascagoula, Mississippi, caused four crashes on Saturday on Interstate 10, due to blowing smoke.

State Highway Patrol spokesperson Cal Robertson said three of the crashes involved two vehicles, while one involved four vehicles. Three of the crashes caused injuries, but no one was killed.
