A group of five teens, including four minors, stabbed a 35-year-old man outside the Lionel-Groulx Metro station on Thursday evening in what appears to have been a random attack, Montreal police said.

The stabbing occurred around 8:30 p.m. Thursday and five suspects fled the scene.

The 35-year-old man was transported to hospital but his injuries are not life-threatening.

Police arrested four people nearby aged 13, 15, 17 and 18. Another teen, a 14-year-old, was arrested Friday afternoon and released with a promise to appear in court. One of the suspects was arrested with a knife. Another had a stick.

Two underage suspects appeared in Quebec youth court Friday. Both teens pleaded not guilty in to charges of aggravated assault, assault causing injury, assault with a weapon and one of the two faced an additional charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

The 18-year-old made a court appearance earlier in the day in Montreal court.

Sabrina Gauthier, a spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, said the attack appears to have been random.

"We're trying to figure out why the young people just beat some guy or randomly … were aggressive," she said. "It appears to be a random attack."

Police investigators are trying to understand the motive behind the attack, Gauthier said, and are analyzing security camera footage.
