TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a boil water advisory for a portion of the city of St. Marys in Pottawatomie County.

The St. Marys Fire Station have cases of bottled water available to residents and if anyone has special needs or is unable to attend call the fire station at 785-437-3605 and they can deliver to your residence.

The advisory affects customers North of Elm Street. This is in effect on April 18, 2024, and remains in effect until the risk of bacterial contamination is resolved.

This advisory is in place due to a power outage resulting in a loss of pressure which can lead to a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.

The KDHE states, “Customers should observe the following precautions until further notice:

  • Boil water for one minute prior to drinking or food preparation or use bottled water.
  • Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker.
  • If your tap water appears dirty, flush the water lines by letting the water run until it clears.
  • Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.
  • Water used for bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may wish to consult their physicians.”

Consumers with questions should call 785-437-2311, or KDHE at 785-296-5514. For more information visit kdhe.ks.gov/waterdisruption
