Both Central New York police officers killed in the line of duty in Sunday night’s shooting in Salina had connections to Syracuse’s Le Moyne College.

Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen attended the school for five years, earning a bachelor’s in accounting in 2017 and an MBA in 2018. He also played on the school’s club hockey team for five years.

Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Michael Hoosock attended the Jesuit college in the 2004-2005 academic year, the school confirmed.

In honor of the fallen officers, Le Moyne lowered the flags on the quad in front of Grewen Hall to half staff, where they will remain until Monday, said Le Moyne spokesman Joseph Della Posta.

On Monday, Le Moyne president Linda LeMura sent a message to members of the Le Moyne community:

“During this time of intense grief, our prayers go out to both men, their family and friends,” LeMura wrote. “More information regarding services, including any that may take place on campus, will be communicated as they are scheduled. To commemorate this tremendous loss, the flags on the Grewen Quad will be flown at half mast from tomorrow morning until next Monday. Sincerely, with great sadness, Linda M. LeMura, Ph.D., President.”

Le Moyne is working on plans for a memorial service to be held at the school’s Panasci Family Chapel, but the details are not yet settled, Della Posta said.

Jensen and Hoosock were killed in a hail of gunfire in Darien Drive in Salina Sunday, officials said. They were following up on an incident that began with an attempted traffic stop earlier that night on Tipperary Hill in Syracuse. The shooter, Christopher R. Murphy, 33, of Salina, was killed in the ensuing gunfight, authorities have said.

Jensen, 29, grew up in Rome and joined the Syracuse police after graduating from the police academy in 2022. He is survived by his parents and a sister.

Hoosock, 37, of Clay, was a decorated 16-year veteran of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and a volunteer firefighter who served as a captain at the Moyers Corners Fire Department. He leaves a wife and three children, ages 3, 5 and 7.
