Motorcyclist killed in crash with N.J. trooper identified

State authorities on Friday said a 65-year-old Toms River man was killed earlier this month when his motorcycle collided with a State Police patrol vehicle.

The motorcyclist, Frank Lando, Jr., was rushed from the scene of the April 9 crash to Virtua Mount Holly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

Trooper Anthony Fernandes, who was not seriously injured, was on patrol on Route 70 in Burlington County when his car “collided with a motorcyclist,” the state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement released Friday.

Authorities provided no other information about the cause of the crash, which happened in Southampton Township around 11:35 a.m., saying only that the “circumstances leading to and surrounding this crash are under investigation.”

State authorities are required by law to investigate any death involving a police officer.

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Lando, a retired software engineer and musician, according to a published obituary. He played guitar and bass in several bands and was devout in his Christian faith, the memorial page said.

“Faith was a key part of Frank’s life, and one we hope shall provide solace for him in a better place,” read his obituary.
