PENDLETON — The Blue Mountain Community College Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee announced it is presenting "Oregon’s Black History: 450 Years in 45 Minutes."
The presentation from Oregon Black Pioneers is Tuesday, April 23, at 5:30 p.m. in Pendleton at BMCC in Pioneer Hall in the library and then again at BMCC in Hermiston on April 24 at 10:30 a.m. This presentation also is the kickoff for a two-month long display of the traveling exhibit "Racing to Change: Oregon’s Civil Rights Years," which showcases Oregon’s civil rights history. "Racing to Change" will be on display April 23 to May 23 in Pendleton and May 24 to June 24 in Hermiston.
Oregon Black Pioneers in the presentation highlights key individuals and events that characterize Oregon's centuries-old Black history.
Oregon Black Pioneers is Oregon’s only historical society dedicated to preserving and presenting the experiences of African Americans statewide. For more than 30 years, it has illuminated the seldom-told stories of people of African descent in Oregon through engaging exhibits, public programs, publications and historical research.
The BMCC DEI Committee facilitates campus-wide dialogue regarding issues of diversity, equity and inclusion and works to create a more inclusive environment to celebrate and promote understanding and respect of diverse people. Roman Olivera, director of the college's Student Resource Center, and Ashlei Emmons, learning management system technologist, co-chair the committee.
