Wrong-way driver arrested in deadly crash in Gilbert, police say

GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A man was arrested after police said he caused a deadly wrong-way crash early Thursday morning in Gilbert.

Police say 23-year-old Harrison Ward was speeding in a pickup truck going east in the westbound lanes of Williams Field Road when he collided head-on with a sedan driver heading west near Recker Road around 2 a.m.

Ward’s pickup then veered right, hit a light pole, and kept going east until it stopped just east of the intersection.

The car driver, identified as 20-year-old Anastasia Dombrowski, died at the scene.

Police say Ward was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. He was released and arrested by Gilbert police.

Ward was booked into jail on charges of second-degree murder and aggravated DUI. The investigation is ongoing.

The road was closed into the morning hours as police investigated but was reopened by 9:30 a.m.
