On Saturday, dozens gathered to remember the life of 5-year-old Mari Scott.
He died on Tuesday night after he accidentally shot himself. It happened near 51st Street and Eastwood Trafficway on Kansas City's east side.
His mother said she hopes he is remembered for his smile and his happiness.
“Mari was so smart. So smart beyond his years. He has so much wisdom, so goofy,” Clairissa Allen, Mari’s mother said. “You had to know Mari to know the type of impact that he had on people and the type of person that he was.”
After just five years of life, his impact was clear on Saturday. Dozens gathered in the parking lot of Operation Breakthrough, where he went for class for the last two years, to remember his character and his life.
"It fills my heart that each and every last one of y’all know how infectious his amazing smile was,” his grandmother said. “He was an amazing little boy who will be truly, truly missed.”
Mari attended kindergarten round up the day he died. His teacher said he was very smart and a good friend.
“He was smart. Like he was diabolically smart,” his teacher said.
“He was a good big brother,” Allen said. “Some of his best friends were kids that were younger than him. So, he had a big impact on a lot of kids and a lot of kids looked up to him."
