A 22-year-old Providence man was arrested after an alleged police chase that began on Interstate 95 in Rhode Island and ended in Newton on Friday evening, police said.
Emanuel Salmeron was charged with failure to stop for a police officer, operating a motor vehicle negligently, two counts of assault by means of a dangerous weapon after he allegedly drove a vehicle at officers, and resisting arrest, Newton Police Chief John F. Carmichael Jr. said in a statement posted to Facebook on Saturday. He was turned over to the custody of State Police.
The statement did not include arraignment information for Salmeron, and it was unclear whether he had hired an attorney. State Police and MBTA Transit Police did not immediately respond to inquiries Sunday evening.

Officers responded to a report of an unconscious man inside a red Mercedes parked in a lot at the Riverside MBTA station at 6:34 p.m. Friday, Carmichael said. Before officers arrived at the station, dispatchers told them the Mercedes had been involved in a chase with police in Rhode Island earlier that evening as the car entered Massachusetts on I-95, police said.
State Police had pursued Salmeron as he allegedly drove north on I-95, Carmichael said. But they ended the chase in Norwood as a precaution because of “the operation of the vehicle” and the car’s excessive speed when it exited the highway there, police said.
Newton officers found the vehicle in the Riverside lot and attempted to contain it before approaching Salmeron, Carmichael said. Salmeron evaded police and attempted to drive away, but the officers were able to prevent him from leaving the lot, according to the statement.
The officers “demonstrated great strength, patience, and restraint as they prevented the suspect vehicle from leaving the lot, and potentially creating a hazardous situation on our roadways,” Carmichael said. “Their strategy and quick decisions helped preserve public safety and prevent any injuries to our officers and other motorists.”

The officers cornered Salmeron in the lot and followed as he allegedly drove to an access road, behind several buildings, and around the perimeter of the grounds, Carmichael said. Salmeron then allegedly abandoned the Mercedes and fled to the MBTA tracks, the statement said.
The officers cornered Salmeron between a fence along the Woodland Apartments and the tracks, Carmichael said. The officers issued verbal commands to Salmeron, “who repeatedly put his hands in his pockets as if to reach for a weapon,” according to the statement.
Another officer jumped down a 5-foot retaining wall and moved through thick underbrush to assist in apprehending Salmeron, Carmichael said.
“All officers on scene . . . did not hesitate to confront a dangerous suspect and take him into custody,” Carmichael said. “I am appreciative of our officers bravery, as well as the patience and tactics exhibited by all officers involved in last nights incident.”
