DENVER (KDVR) — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warned people of a new scam targeting the family members of inmates in the county jail.

According to the sheriff’s office, someone calls these family members and claims to be a captain or a lieutenant. The person asks for bond money to be wired to them.

“This is a scam! Don’t fall for it,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.

The sheriff’s office said it will never call to ask for bond money, does not accept wire transfers and will not pressure people over the phone.

Douglas County recommended that potential victims hang up and call the jail to verify if their loved one is in custody. If they are, the best next step would be to contact a bondsperson.

Coloradans reportedly lost nearly $200 million to scammers in 2023, according to the FBI. Investment schemes, email fraud and fake tech support were among the most popular scams in the state.

This is not the first scam that the sheriff’s office has warned people about in Douglas County. In January, they warned about a jury duty scam where people were using publicly available staff names to claim the victim owes money for missing jury duty.
