Sparkling new gym floors, painted light fixtures and new mulch are some things that North Augusta residents will see with the recent refurbishing at Riverview Park and Activities Center.

While people were out of town for spring break and for the annual Masters Tournament, staff and maintenance crews with North Augusta Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department were able to complete much needed refurbishing projects at the Riverview Park Activities Center. Work was also done at other parks and athletic facilities.

Some items that were completed during the week of April 8-10 include the refurbishing of six gym floors, racquetball courts, the painting of light poles at the activities center and the placement of mulch at all of the playgrounds.

“It’s a great time to do it because a lot of kids are on spring break and people are out of town for the Masters," said Rick Meyer, who serves as the director of North Augusta Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department.

Meyer said the downtime period is the only time they are able to get things complete because the building is always filled and busy with recreational activities. He said some events were cancelled while the gym was being refurnished.

Meyer said a lot of work was done with help from the city of North Augusta's support and the recreation division team.

“We work in conjunction with the property maintenance division, they pretty much take care of the outside of the park and we pretty much take care of the ballfields,” he said. “It was kind of a joint effort to kind of make it look good.”

The total cost to refinish all six gym floors and two racquetball courts was $21,546, it was $1,500 to paint 22 parking lot light poles, $15,000 to fertilize and aerate 16 Riverview Park Athletic Fields and $3,400 for mulch at Riverview Park, Meyer said.

He said the recent refurbishing project is not part of department's 10-year master plan.

A draft of the plan was released in February.

“We are proud of our maintenance team for their efforts this (Masters) week," Meyer said.
