OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Warmer weather arrived today but was overshadowed by the powerful wind gusts that have reached over 50mph at times this afternoon. Wind gusts reached 56mph in Red Oak, 51mph in Lincoln, and 49mph in Omaha, just a few of the very strong gusts from the day. Thankfully, winds should be backing off a little for the evening hours as a cold front pushes through.

Temperatures will be very warm in the meantime, with most of the area seeing readings in the mid to upper 70s for the late afternoon and early evening. Temperatures will cool off in to the 60s by 10pm, with a slight chance for a few showers or thunderstorms developing by the late evening and overnight hours. Any rain should be brief, so don’t expect to pick up a lot of rainfall. The best chances for rain will be across far southeast Nebraska into far southern Iowa and northwest Missouri, mainly staying to the south of the Omaha metro.

Any rain should be moving out of the area by Tuesday morning with lighter winds across the area. Unfortunately, winds will pick back up again for the afternoon hours with northwest winds potentially gusting over 30mph at times. The northwest wind will keep temperatures a bit cooler, with highs likely only reaching the upper 60s around the metro, to the low 70s for areas south of Highway 2.

Quieter weather is expected Wednesday with partly sunny skies, lighter winds, and highs in the mid to upper 60s. Breezy conditions return on Thursday with highs pushing back into the low and mid 70s for most of the area. The warm-up will come ahead of another strong storm system that will likely bring thunderstorms to the area late Thursday night into Friday morning. A couple rounds of thunderstorms are possible on Friday with some severe storms possible. Gusty winds will be likely as well, with gusts of 30-40mph common, and some gusts over 40mph not out of the question.

The storms should be out of here Friday night with a break in the rain expected for Saturday. That break doesn’t last long with rain chances returning to the forecast by Saturday night and Sunday.
