All lanes of I-5 south closed near Eugene due to police activity

BREAKING UPDATE: Authorities say a former police officer wanted for kidnapping his son after allegedly killing two people in Washington state shot himself after a police chase ended on Interstate 5 north of Eugene, Oregon, on Tuesday afternoon. His 1-year-old son is safe in police custody, while the suspect’s current condition is unknown at this time, according to authorities.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — All lanes of I-5 South just north of Eugene closed on Tuesday afternoon, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced.

ODOT said that the highway was closed at milepost 196 due to police activity. Officials encourage using an alternate route.
