ROCHESTER, Minn. – Police say a 38-year-old Rochester woman was swindled out of $3,000 by a threat of arrest.

The victim contacted the Rochester Police Department on Saturday and reported getting a phone call from someone claiming to be a sergeant from the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.  The caller told the woman there were active warrants for her arrest for failure to appear in court.

The victim says she was transferred to someone claiming to be a lieutenant from the sheriff’s office who told the victim to drive to Cub Foods and use the coin kiosk to send $3,000 to a phone number with a Detroit area code.

The victim told investigators the call used names of actual law enforcement officers with the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office.

Rochester police say law enforcement will never contact you to collect money for citations or warrants.
